Live Life – Love Life Crochet Pattern Release

This pattern has been under way for quite some time. It could be argued that I have been procrastinating over it, although that wouldn’t be me to do that at all…

Tapestry Crocheters Hatched

Today nine superb tapestry crocheters were hatched at the library in Skive in Denmark, another great day and I think the pictures speak for themselves!

The surroundings are bright, modern and steeped in sun and the staff and management at the library are second to none, helpful and ever encouraging for which I am very grateful. Special thanks are extended to Anette Dalsgaard, ever vigilant and always to hand,  helpful and making life so very easy for me as a tutor, she is looking after us all with delicious lunch, and a steady stream of goodies with tea and coffee all day! Tak Anette!

Thanks to everyone for a great day! And special thanks to Hanne for photography.

Now it’s on with the thinking cap to think up the next workshops, but feet up first!…

A Lively Handbag

I have not exactly been going to bed early the last week or so and that is for a very good reason, if I may say so myself. I allowed myself to indulge in a spot of my all time favourite crochet discipline, namely tapestry crochet.

I have harboured the idea for a colourful handbag for a while but never got around to doing the number crunching to make it possible to manifest. However, the Tinahely Arts Group are having huge Culture Night celebrations on Friday September 23rd and one of the events is a group exhibition at the Riverside Business Centre and I thought my Live Life * Love Life Tapestry Handbag would lend itself to an outing for that.

There is nothing like a deadline to focus the mind and this is the result of my labour.

I rolled out a large ball of the wonderful Kauni Effektgarn. The colours are rich and clever – they inspire me every time I have a ball about the place. It’s actually not just the colours that inspire me, but also the coarseness of the wool and not least the wonderful scent of lanolin that emits as one works through the ball of yarn resulting in baby soft hands. The contrast colours are worked in Einband from Ístex, another one of my all time favourite yarns which is coarse too. Coarse yarns are great for stitch definition, a vital ingredient in anything I crochet.

I used simple, classical bamboo handles which I got at The Yarn Room, they are ‘au naturel’ which plays well with the yarn, while they, at the same time, are delicate enough to give the bag balance. They make the most wonderful clicking sound when one grabs the two handles together.

Oh yes, the aesthetics of a handbag…

Happy Handbag

Happy Handbag - Tapestry CrochetI have finally found a workaround for the handles of the handbag I started in June. I couldn’t finish it there and then as the vintage handles I had stashed were first hidden in ‘a safe place’ and when they finally showed up, they turned out to be unsuitable for the bag.

I then went through the long procrastination about how to solve the issue… I ended up using a couple of bamboo handles which I covered in crochet to get the right balance – they were too flimsy ‘au naturelle’. I made a square insert for the bottom, to give the bag a bit of hold, I used a piece of wood with holes for the handle ties in the upturn along the inside of the brim and I tied the handles on with the most delicious orange coloured leather straps.

I am a little bit in love with this bag… It’s bright and cheerful, I like bright and cheerful.

Note: The bag is worked in remnants of Lett-Lopi and Studio Donegal Aran weight yarns, it is worked on a 4.5 mm hook to give a good strong texture to the fabric.

It’s Heart Work

IMG_9754smallI started crocheting Bags Of Romance in Tapestry Crochet a couple of weeks ago and they turned out to be real cute, if I may so myself. It would be more accurate to call them purses but that just doesn’t roll off the tongue very well. They turned out so cute that I went on another one of my obsessive compulsive crochet trips and made a heap and I thought this Valentine’s Day would be appropriate for sharing my latest labour of love here. I have included a little clever ring in the picture to give an idea of scale. I got the ring on Etsy from tinahdee she makes jewellery out of recycled silver. Tina was the one to coin the phrase Heart Work…

I made a few of the little pouches with the button, one drawstring bag for keeping treasures in and over the weekend I got stuck into a bigger purse, the one with the darker green colour included. I am having great fun improvising the sections of pattern designs as I go which means my canvas is completely blank at all times although I do complete a section at a time. My free spirit has a preference for this approach and that goes for everything I make, really.

Yes, some people would find it hard work to work tapestry crochet on a size 2 mm hook, to me it’s pure heart work though.
The alert reader may also have noticed I have ‘a thing’ with hearts. I find the shape so harmonious and well rounded. Perhaps I will put these up for sale some day, although some of them will definitely be given away as presents to loved ones. I know of both a recent engagement and a wedding just around the corner too. A little pouch with semi-precious stones of romance is one idea that I am toying with for a romantic present…

Happy Hearty Valentine’s Day!

Note: In other news, I found out today that I was nominated for the Irish Blog Awards 2011. That’s exciting! And thank you very much for the nomination, whoever you are!

Bags Of Romance

I was on the road a lot this week, I was even on the train to Cork and back again in the one day, but more about that later. For all my travels, I needed a handy little project that was portable and interesting at the same time and what better than some fine yarn and an equally fine hook, but not too fine either. I mean, the work-light on a train and out and about is not exactly predictable, so very fine lace was ruled out…

IMG_9559smallBags Of Romance © Irene Lundgaard 2011

I dipped into the stash and found some pretty DMC Petra Crochet Cotton (5), a size 2 mm hook and then I dug out the Hearty Tapestry Bag pattern for some tapestry crochet. I made some adaptation so this time it’s all soft tones here and I have a few little pretty Bags of Romance made up. They still need blocking and I have to find suitable buttons from the stash, once that’s done I’m all set for Valentine’s Day! Are you?

At Home With Tapestry Crochet

Hearty Tapestry Bag by Irene LundgaardSince I found Tapestry Crochet and made it my own my Scandinavian crochet self has found her true spiritual home. My love of colour work, which was always confined to knitting, I felt, has truly found a home. My plan this autumn and winter is to dip into the stash of beautiful coloured pure wool yarns and see what I can lure out of it with my tapestry hook.
The Hearty Tapestry Bag has finally been written up as a pattern with chart et al. To celebrate, I feel an urge to make another one, but perhaps I should just focus on a couple of WIP’s that need finishing before I indulge my urge?…

Congregating In Tinahely

Last night was Culture Night and my local village was teeming with activity. First of all, we launched the Tinahely Arts Group with a beautiful group exhibition, then there was crowd theatre, a play by a local playwright at the arts centre and not least an outdoor movie.

Congregation Vessel - exteriorCongregation Vessel - interior

final poster group exhibI entered my Congregation Vessel in the exhibition and it is sitting in a very beautiful congregation of fine art and craft work. Should you make it to Tinahely before Wednesday you can enjoy the exhibition too. It’s in the foyer of the Business Centre at the bridge in Tinahely. While you’re in Tinahely, you should go and see the Alterations exhibition at the Courthouse Arts Centre and most certainly have a look at The Irish Reef at the same destination too.

The beauty of being part of a group arts exhibition is that we have to invigilate… For me, that means four hours late this afternoon and evening, four hours where I will bring my hook and clock up some hours of crochet. Life is good!

A Tapestry Vessel

I used my Congregation design on a sweater very many moons ago but really wanted to find some other use for it.

I am currently preparing for a small exhibition for Culture Night in Tinahely, Co Wicklow and thought the design might work on a vessel.

I am not quite there yet, but I’m definitely on my way!

Note: The vessel is worked in Cushendale DK and the colours are simply just delicious!

A Crochet Tapestry Bag

I am working on making some nice small patterns for the workshop on Saturday in Tapestry Crochet and I am trying to create some simple design patterns that will have maximum visual impact and will make it simple enough for the participants to get the technique.

IMG_3563smallYesterday I ran this little bag off the hook and I have made it a size that it will fit the average small paperback for the summer holiday treks around the world, or perhaps just around town.

I put the carrier strap a bit askew so that it will just hang right across the chest.

Normally when I work with Tapestry Crochet I work with a much smaller hook than usually required for the chosen yarn to get the strongest and tightest fabric possible. However, in this case I worked in Icelandic Ístex Lopi which is an Aran weight so I tried to work it on a size 5 mm hook and it’s just fine although the fabric is looser than normal, but it’s still substantial enough.

I like the colours, they are a bit more loud in reality, but otherwise subtle enough. The Ístex yarns have the most fantastic colour range.

My next tapestry project is quite loud. I’m working in Schoppel Wolle Zauberball sock yarn and I can’t say that the colours are exactly subtle. Watch this space!
