Birthday Crochet – The Ultimate Celebration

This weekend saw Pia & Thue’s 40th birthday and I celebrated with a spot of crochet – the ultimate from of celebration if you ask me. Pia & Thue are avid bikers, this summer saw them “do Sweden” on their bikes and next year they are planning a very long bike trip in America… What could I do but crochet them a motorbike doily to celebrate?

I played around with the rough image of the bike and bikers and then softened the image by using some edgings from my Great Granny’s sampler book which I have found inspiration in and written about many times before. I mounted the bike on a gorgeous tangerine coloured card with rice paper behind as I have a feeling it will end up on a wall at Thue & Pias

Pia & Thue have been graceful enough not to comment on the fact that the bike very much resembles the 3 gear Puch moped I rode in my teens…

Happy Biker Birthday folks!

Note: I used Ecru DMC 100 and a 0.75 mm crochet hook.

New Crochet Necklaces

I’m on a roll with these summer neck pieces. I like the simplicity of the grey linen and silver coloured beads – once we get the sun and a bit of a tan I think it’ll look great on some summer skin!

I have a bag of delicious Mulberry Silk, I have been stroking the cones for a good while wondering what to use these goodies for. Yesterday I completed this curry coloured piece and started a bright red one immediately after which I hope to have done later in the week.

Mulberry Silk is quite addictive and the colours are just so rich and delicious! It is the most delicious yarn ever. Probably!
It’s delicious to touch, it drapes elegantly, the colours are gorgeous. Just fabulous!

Note: These necklaces are for sale in the Deirdre Minogue Sale Shop in Tinahely, Co Wicklow, Ireland. The shop is open Friday and Saturday from 11 to 5.

In-between Crochet

I have an idea for a sweater I want to try and make but somehow I can’t get my crochet mojo in gear for it, so in the meantime I am having fun with flowers. Cute flowers, brash flowers, pretty flowers and all to be worn either on the head or around the neck!

I thought I would share a picture of one of the headbands I’ve made over the last few days. It’s made in flax and wool. I have some beautiful cones of spring and summer coloured flax all suited for about a 2 mm hook. I think the rustic yarn gives a nice texture to the flowers, not like the smooth look of mercerised cotton and I have this notion it will be easier to keep in place too.

I love crocheting flowers!

The Power Of Crochet Flowers

I teach crochet classes in the Market Square building right in the centre of Tinahely, Co Wicklow. At the bottom of the steps the Tinahely ICA erected a granite bench for people to congregate at for at chat. Behind the bench there is a tree – a tree that I appear to have “something” for

Today the crocheters of Tinahely sprinkled crochet flowers onto the branches of the tree while it is still bare, just because we can! Colourful flowers, imaginative flowers, mad flowers, fun flowers, pretty ones, romantic ones – in other words a great concoction of crochet flower biodiversity in one place, flowers to brighten up the last few weeks of winter.

Perhaps the flowers will be stolen, perhaps they will be laughed at, frowned upon, embraced, torn apart, picked and be never seen again and perhaps they will cheer up the people passing and make them smile…

Crochet In The Bold Corner

It has been too quiet about this place for the last week or so, all due to much teaching of crochet and many very capable hands turning out well defined crochet stitches.

I am also busy preparing handouts for my next workshops in Denmark; or rather, I should be doing that as they do not just manifest themselves just because I have crochet the relevant samples. I have not yet mastered the art of printing them out straight from my brain – if you have found a way, please let me know.

As I said, I should be preparing handouts but my imagination ran riot the last few days and I started no less than four different projects, and they are all in a state of non-completion. I am being very bold and I had to send myself in the bold corner.

That move proved counter productive and matters escalated in that corner as I found about 100g of yarn that just had to be crochet there and then. The crochet has absolutely no relevance to the workshops I am preparing other than I just may be able to turn it into a pretty cushion cover, that way it fits the crochet “Living” workshop I’m doing. Can’t you imagine this crochet stretched over a pretty piece of violet coloured silk? My imagination can, but I really do not have the time for these sort of ideas popping up in the middle of an otherwise well scheduled time plan. Fortunately, I don’t actually have enough yarn to complete the project – and I don’t have any violet coloured silk either. Yet…

I better get back to those handouts… Are you good at being disciplined or are you bold like me?

Brave Danish Crocheters

We had a great day of freeform crochet today at the wonderful library in the town of Skive in Denmark and the brave crocheters threw themselves at the task! I think the pictures speak for themselves!

Fingerless Freeform Crochet

I am very excited about the Freeform Crochet Workshop which I am preparing for the library in Skive in Denmark next Saturday.

I found a few odd balls of ends of yarn in my basket, picked a pallet to prepare some crochet scrumbles for the workshop but they took on a life of their own and turned into a pair of fingerless mittens. Fun, cheerful warm hands for the winter!

I have another pallet of colours out now, rather more acute in tone, I wonder if they are going to turn themselves into anything or if I will actually have to take charge… One of the great inspirations in freeform crochet is the fact that it has a will of it’s own almost.

Note: If you would like to take part in the workshop you have to contact Skive Library directly. Details can be found here!

If you would like me to come to you and your friends/craft group and do a Crochet Freeform Workshop just drop me a mail and I will customize a day for you and we can work together to make it happen. Contact me at irene@yarnclasses.com.
