I am rather deeply infiltrated in the woolly fleece of a public art project to be launched here in Tinahely, Co Wicklow on Friday April 29th in connection with the annual Tinahely Walking Festival. I’m a member of the The Tinahely Arts Group, which is a collaborative of artists and craft people working together and we are launching our Tinahely Sheep Flock, a flock of sculpted sheep personalized by each individual member.
The sheep will be on display around the village, starting at the Market Square and spreading out in the village to emulate the rhythm of a market town which Tinahely once was. The sheep might put in an appearance at The Tinahely Show and then they will come back to the square in the autumn and will hopefully reappear again next year and so the years turn.
My own sheep is going to be completely transformed and today the process began. I was helped to get to the heart of the matter with hole drilling galore as I was introduced to a world of magnets and steel shavings and punches and what-not by the most capable and patient man I have meet in a long time. For that I am very grateful.
The next step is to manifest the idea that I have for my sheep and that’s the real hard bit and all I can say is, watch this space… I will be, that’s for sure!
