Getting Ready For the Fair

The hook is red hot here! I’m crocheting like a mad woman – morning noon and night – and the hats, the snoods and the fingerless mitts are rolling off the hook for the Christmas Spirit Fair on Sunday. I took a few pictures of some of the hats and fingerless mittens today and though I would share.

I thought I would make some headbands too. I’m of the thick haired variety and often find hats too warm but still hate having cold ears and headbands are just perfect for that set of conditions. I have made some rather girlie ones – who says winter wear has to be dull and dark?

I have also got the pattern for some pretty outdoor snowflakes done, but the pictures did not come out too well, so they will be unleashed later in the week.

And now it’s back to the hook!

Christmas Spirit Fair

I am delighted to announce the 7th Annual Christmas Spirit Fair, in the Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely on Sunday December 9th from 11am -5pm.

Margarete and I have held this fair for the last 7 years and to us it is not Christmas until we have decorated the Courthouse with beautiful greenery, lit the Christmas trees and made the spirit of the fair work its magic – we hope you join us to get into it too.

We have a great range of stalls full of Fine Handmade Irish Arts & Crafts.

This year’s stall holders are:
Catherine Ryan, Daisy Chain Crafts, Aughrim Crafters, Christien Van Bussel, Maeve Hunter, Rose Sharpe, Sue Wardell, Mary Sheridan, KARE Tinahely, Flourpower Cakes, Catherine Wilcoxson, Kajsa Kinsella, Irene Lundgaard.

As in previous years Tina and Barbara will have a lovely café area where you can catch up with friends and family. The proceeds of their cake sale is going to the Saint Vincent De Paul charity while Margarete and I run a raffle with very generous prizes – alcohol is involved – in aid of the Senior Citizen Christmas Dinner.

Enjoy this year’s Christmas Spirit Fair – get into it!

The Christmas Season Is Kicked Off

Today we had our wonderful Christmas Spirit Fair at the Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely. All the stallholders had brought superb goods which they presented in the most lovely cheerful manner and we had a steady stream of people come through the doors all day long. I just thought I would share a few pictures from the day before I grab the hook for a bit of recreational crochet.

Colourful Fair Sneak Peek

My hooks are red hot these chilly days as they are busy making stock for our Christmas Spirit Fair on Sunday. Much of my produce is inspired by the cold in the sense that it’s things to keep things warm be that people’s heads or tea and coffee pots! Everything is made in pure yarns like Alpaca, wool and some silk blends too. Here is a sneak peek at a few of the tea-cosies and some hats too.

I have still to do all the finishing, but the stock is building up just nicely and one thing is certain, my busy hands are not cold these days!

Christimas Spirit Fair in Tinahely

My friend Margarete and I have organised a Christmas Spirit Fair at the Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely for some years and this year is no exception. We have beautiful stalls with all sorts of splendid crafts and perhaps we will see you there too.

If nothing else, come along and get into the spirit of Christmas with a cuppa and a chat with your friends at the little café we will have open all day long. If you do come along, please come and say hello!

True Christmas Spirit

Yesterday saw our Sixth annual Christmas Spirit Fair at Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely, and what a spirit it was! The un-gritted mountain roads were black ice treacherous making movement fairly lethal. Never mind; Wicklow people are very special spirits as it turned out.

Hundreds of Thousands of Toxins‘ is decorative display

IMG_8795small Most of the stall holders managed to make their way to the spectacular venue, they came by hook and crook and some managed to arrive on willpower alone. Wonderful people braved the roads in defiance to get to the fair, including our very own Nicknit with lovely family.

IMG_8785smallUnfortunately, we were missing no less than four stallholders including my dear friend and co-host, who was stuck up the mountains and whose stall was to be in aid of our local KARE centre. They lost all the plants to frost. A great shame for all four, but it was an even greater shame for the punters that did manage to get there…

IMG_8798smallWe were lucky enough to have most of our usual kind and happy local patrons visit in spite of the road conditions, among them were mountain dwellers that made it down in their 4x4s, good friends, lovely people. Some walked, some nearly crawled, but they came and made the day and we are all very grateful and hope for a repeat performance next year.

Many random acts of kindness were performed all day.
That’s The Spirit

Special thanks to Tina who stepped in at extremely short notice and saved the day by keeping us all topped up with ‘cuppas’ galore!

Happy Christmas Everyone!

Christmas Fair Preparations

Christmas Fair webpage 2010smallThis year we will have our 6th annual Christmas Spirit Fair at Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely. My hook is red hot while I run off hats and scarves and cowls and mittens and little flowers and nice woollies for my stall. I’m sure the other stall holders are equally busy with their production.

This year we will have about 15 stalls, it’s a bit of a squeeze but I’m sure they will all fit in. We are going to use all available space and create a festive Christmas feel in the entire house.

I recommend you come along, if nothing else, come along and enjoy the atmosphere and meet and greet your friends before the final lap of hectic activity kicks in in the second half of the Christmas month. You might even pick up the presents while you are there in a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

The stall holders are all local artists and crafts people: KARE with mixed crafts, artist Sinead Ryan with soaps and handmade cards, potter Christien Van Bussel and her woodturning group, Kate Gibbons with her cool jewellery, Collette will bring yummy baking, Rose Sharpe with her quirky pottery, Declan Kinsella with his precious trees, Irene Lundgaard with my winter woollies, Senan O’Brien with his stunning Tinahely Christmas cards and pretty Christmas Puddings, Mary Sheridan with her mixed crafts, Catherine Ryan with her fantastic prints, Sue Wardell with her healthy honey, Pauline Larkin with her hand knitted Teddies, Sharon Murphy with her pretty silver and beadwork and Anita will have a steady supply of treats with coffee and tea throughout the day.

Another Dive On The Irish Reef

IMG_7478smallIMG_7483smallFriday morning we had some spook at The Courthouse Arts Centre as 27 scary pupils from Tinahely National School came for a dive on The Reef. They were so colourful and receptive. And they kindly gave me a beautiful flower and a lovely Halloween card to go with it. I adored the way they were appalled at the Pacific Garbage Patch and I was completely charmed when I was asked what movies the video kelp on the Toxic Reef was crochet from. Unfortunately, I  couldn’t remember.

They gave me a beautiful flower and a handmade card and helped me opening a coral submission for The Reef. The children were utterly charming – all of them!

The Irish Reef exhibition in Tinahely is coming to an end on Friday 29th and we had the last workshop of talks on Marine Ecology, Hyperbolic Geometry and not least Hyperbolic Crochet yesterday and we were blessed with an enthusiastic crowd. I didn’t get a picture of everyone there, but I did get a shot of some inspired crocheters.

The Tempo Is Hotting Up

We have posters, we have leaflets, we have a tight schedule for the coming week. We are Reefers and we have a Hyperbolic Crochet exhibition to set up.

Not sure how much crochet will actually be done around here for the next week or so…
