Free form Crochet Workshops in Denmark

Hækle Workshops Oktober 2012 Skive Bibliotek plakat - LørdagI’m currently preparing a couple of full day workshops at the end of the month. I have been invited back to the library in Skive in Denmark, where I will be teaching on Saturday October 27th and Sunday October 28th. The Sunday workshop is fully booked, but I believe there are still a few places left in the Free Form workshop on the Saturday.

I’m having great fun making a few samples of which I will show pictures later in the week when I come across some proper light for taking decent photos in.

Note: If you would like to take part in the workshop you have to contact Skive Library directly. Details can be found here!

Culture Night Crochet

We celebrated Culture Night 2012 all over Ireland last Friday September 21st. My own contribution was obviously crochet…

On the square in Tinahely we have a granite bench which was donated to the village by the wonderful women of Tinahely I.C.A. It’s a sturdy granite bench that holds a lot of gatherings of the young as well as the old.

The Tinahely Arts Group had planned to display Words of The Village with each contributor installing their own words, I’m a member and decided to partake.

Behind the bench there is a pretty tree with branches sheltering the bench from rain and wind and when I pass the bench I often wonder what conversations and aspirations the tree picks up, what dreams are aired that drift up from the bench and into the tree. Armed with this thought I set to work for some weeks, every time I passed the bench and the youth were gathered on it I asked them what their dreams were. My plan was to distil their words and crochet them into a luminous web that would be seen in the dark at Culture Night. A web of words caught in the tree.

As the days went on in my word gathering, I began to see a pattern of questions more than anything else and I realized my collection of words would have to be W-words. I called my piece “W-Ord-s Of Youth”. The hyphens are framing the Danish word “ord”, which means word or words.  Culture Night 2012 W-Ord-s of Youth Tinahely Arts Group 11

I used luminous paint on the words to ensure they would shine out in the night. The village is bright at night and the words did not shine much but they are doing just that now here at home in my hallway, where I pass them for nightly visits to the necessarium. They are insistently demanding answers. Every night! As John said, when I explained to him about my installation, ‘well, the old that also gather on the bench, they will have the answers’.

I’m just not sure that I am old enough to have the answers quite figured out yet… Not on my nocturnal sojourns anyway!

Doily Doodles

I have been away for the last couple of weeks. I was in Denmark for a shot of family and hot summer weather and even managed to get a bit of colour on my nose… I was also in London for a happy shot of sisterly energy!

However, there is no travel without crochet and bringing a hook on the aeroplane is never an issue, unlike knitting needles, not when using Clover Soft Touch crochet hooks anyway.
I brought a ball of ecru DMC Babylo 40 and my 0.75 mm crochet hook – that is some 1167 meters of thread and many hours of crochet and boy did I have fun!

I made crochet doily doodles – they shaped themselves in my hands and I really enjoyed the process!

I have a notion that they are to be part of one of my contributions to Culture Night in Tinahely on Friday September 21st – or perhaps not. One thing is for sure, I have not finished exploring this fun form of free form crochet.

I thought I would break out the free-form hook and this is my contribution…

Note: I will offer free form crochet workshops during the autumn. Drop me a line if you are interested in participating and I will let you know when and where the classes are available:

Free Form Crochet Fun

One of the great joys of my life is when I get a chance to prepare something new for my crochet classes. Sometimes it’s just a description of a technique that needs to be smartened up a bit or it can just be new inspiration both for my pupils and for myself.

At the moment I am preparing some free-form workshops for the autumn and while I’m doing that, my current weekly classes are being introduced to this wonderful funky fun style of crochet. A style where only one’s imagination is the limit.

As always I am trying hard to bring texture into the equation, texture is one of the most exciting elements of free-form, and as always, as you can see, it’s the colour that’s winning here and I have come to conclusion that I have to allow my mind be ruled by my heart on this – at least on the current piece I am working – and just go with the colours – textures do not come easily to me! I wonder if they ever will…

If I have a notion what this piece might turn into? I might, but we’ll see if my heart is in agreement…

There’s Crochet And Then There’s Crochet

Burly Haired Crochet Sheela Na Gig Gone Venus by Irene LundgaardWhile my sheep is left to dry and while I think up what’s next for it I have had fun with crocheting a sunflower which will be revealed at a later stage (once I get the maths right). However, I have also been celebrating International Crochet Month. I have immersed myself further in this piece of free-hand crochet. The right term might be free-form, but I always associate that term with “scrumbles” and loads of bullion stitches and this piece I’m working on has none of that, it is sculptural and has taken on a life of it’s own.

It does have what to me appears to be something that could be called burly hair. I know other people would probably not use that term in connection with hair but seeing that it is my hands this piece of work is running through, I can tell you, it is just that!

I wonder if Venus ever had burly hair – or if she was a redhead for that matter…

I’m longing to just crochet and crochet until this creature has fully developed, but first I must print the last few sheets of hand-outs for the workshops in Denmark at the weekend and there is also the small matter of some packing to be done, but tomorrow, while I travel…
